Negative Keywords

What are Negative Keywords?

Negative keywords are used to narrow the targeted audience for your Google Ad Words campaigns. If we are buying keyword ads to drive traffic to a regional jobs and employment website focused on the San Diego job market, for example, then we might use negative keywords to prevent our ad from being shown to users looking for jobs in New York or Chicago.

How to Use Negative Keywords

Negative keywords are invoked in an Ad Words campaign by putting a minus sign (-) before one or more search keywords. User search queries that contain negative keywords will not be shown your ad.

Continuing the example above, we would use the negative keywords " -new york -chicago " to exclude those query terms from our target audience.

Increase your ROI

By targeting your audience more selectively with negative keywords, you can increase your ROI. Avoiding search keywords which are known to be outside your target market lowers your CPC and boosts your efficiency.
